UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate souls, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.

A World of Personal Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The central gameplay loop involves managing the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
