Two Separate Cuba-Headed Humanitarian Vessels Reported Missing following Leaving the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive rescue and recovery mission is actively ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a duo of lost sailing vessels loaded with humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Cuba.
Naval Rescue Missions Deployed
Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and search planes to find the two vessels, which were transporting a minimum of nine total personnel, per a navy statement.
The vessels had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.
Context of Aid to Cuba
The island nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country endures multiple national electricity failures.
"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and each boat are outfitted with appropriate navigational gear and communication devices," a spokesperson involved in the effort stated.
The nine crew members are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their embassy officials.
"The group is collaborating completely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.
Recent Relief Delivery
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and officially received a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.
That vessel, nicknamed "a modern Granma" following the name of the boat in which Fidel Castro landed in Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, infant formula, bikes and food.
Larger International Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded attempts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over 50k operations called off in Cuba amid power shortages.
Diplomatic tensions have increased over the past months, with statements from several leaders highlighting the delicate nature of relations.
Reacting to recent comments, a prominent Cuban official declared that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Indications suggest that initial phases of discussions were initiated, although their present status remains uncertain.
The naval forces said it was pledged to using every available asset at its reach to find the boats and guarantee the safety of the crews.
At this time, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
