The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life without fear.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so widespread that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
