Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Icon, Dies at Eighty-One Years Old
The world grieves the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and performer whose distinctive vocal talent played a key role in spreading the reggae genre across the globe. He passed away at the age of 81.
“With deep sorrow that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am grateful for his loved ones, close friends, fellow artists and colleagues who shared his life’s path. To all his fans globally, please know that your support was his motivation throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.
Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hits such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat sound and uplifting spirit brought him a vast and longstanding following.
In addition to his musical accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film “The Harder They Come”, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.
Jimmy Cliff was one of just a handful of musicians, including Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
