Gas Detonation Claims Three Carabinieri While Executing Property Removal Operation in the Verona Area
A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in Italy's north.
Event Timeline
The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house close to the Verona region to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
The three victims who died served in the Italian military police.
Legal Proceedings
Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who escaped following the blast was found not long after. All three have been transported to medical facility.
The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene revealed the structure turned into a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The head of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the property was facing an court order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.
Mediators had been dispatched to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents triggered the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told the media.
A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our members,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also discovered at the site, the minister said.
Injuries and Destruction
Injured individuals by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
He believed the detonation had occurred on a floor above the access point and told the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.
Community Reaction
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed local news, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
