A Remarkable Year for Striking Balls

I couldn't comprehend football before I watched it with my father. It happened while I was staying to my childhood home smack in the heart of the global tournament season. The Italian team was in contention, and that was a huge deal to my father, an expatriate from southern Italy. Despite the fact that I consistently thought the sport tedious, his passion was completely captivating that it riveted me to the TV. The puzzle pieces clicked that day, immediately perceiving all the thrilling nuances the sport had to offer and accepting its deep-seated importance. It was crucial that the Italian squad win the match.

It's hard to describe the draw of sports to those who are indifferent. It takes to experience that magical instant where everything clicks for yourself — or, as a minimum, you need a knowledgeable mentor by your side to demystify the complex mechanics and reveal the beating heart of the sport. Evidence from this year shows that this is something a digital title can accomplish. The last twelve months delivered three exceptional football games that explored the sport in very different, user-friendly ways.

The Cultural Touchstone: Despelote

The most significant entry of that trio is Despelote. This indie game is a slice-of-life tale set in South America. On the surface, it's a typical tale about a child finding his way in the turn of the millennium and discovering his identity. Yet, all of this occurs against the backdrop of an monumental historic moment: The country's team has made it for the global tournament, and it is the single most important thing happening in the characters' lives. Football games are on every storefront window. They are shown during weddings. It's the sole topic anyone can discuss. Ball is life.

In this environment, we observe the main character evolve. It's not simply about navigating where he fits in at a social gathering, but where he fits into his neighborhood as well. Football is inseparable from his being, and it's via the sport that he uncovers himself as a devoted citizen. It's the closest a video game has ever come to allowing me to comprehend my own father and the reason he was so enthralled to the World Cup all those years ago.

The Athletic Core: Rematch

While Despelote focuses on the cultural weight of soccer, two other titles from this year capture the intricacies of the sport itself in more digestible ways than standard simulations. Rematch, the latest game from the creators behind Sifu, explores the raw physicality of soccer. This online experience deconstructs the sport by transforming it into a frantic battle played between small teams. It borrows ideas from titles like Rocket League to create an pick-up-and-play match that's built around fluid cooperation and precise possession.

My summer was consumed with Rematch for a solid month this year. It seemed easy during my initial sessions, but every time I fired it up, I discovered new layers. Beyond basic kicking and passing, I learned how to dodge around defenders to evade a takeover. I mastered how to release the ball to stop someone from taking possession. I drilled my skill moves until I could elevate a spectacular maneuver into a proper way to escape pressure. All these subtle techniques helped me understand soccer in ways I could never understand as a casual viewer. I emerged with a deeper respect for the vital importance athletic prowess plays in the sport, acknowledging what a physically demanding sport it truly is.

The Cerebral Game: Pup Champs

If Rematch showcased the physical dimension of soccer, Pup Champs whimsically demonstrated the strategic side. The latest title from the developers behind Golf Peaks, Pup Champs is a card-based football strategy title featuring puppies. Each puzzle tasks you to maneuver a handful of dogs on a board and shoot the ball into a net. Straightforward, but the complexity comes from the fact that each pup has a particular kick pattern, they can only move a limited number of spaces, and there are blockers to contend with. Completing a level calls for strategic foresight and a masterful understanding of the field. It feels like you're directing a youth soccer team, devising the perfect tactics to steer your dogs to glory. It's not a realistic version of the sports by any means, but it's a delightful companion piece to Rematch.

A New Perspective

Of course, there were also more games about soccer, as expected. Major series came out right on schedule and beloved management sims made their much-hyped return. But, thanks to these standout experiences, I spent 2025 engaging with soccer more than I have in years. Games allowed me to see the physical artistry that goes into a pursuit I'll simply never be skilled at (too much running!) and understand why soccer holds importance to millions of people. It's a small trend in interactive entertainment I would love to see continue, with more innovative interpretations to sports games that seek to communicate the feel of a sport rather than replicating it exactly. Furthermore, a couple of games succeeded in this for different sports this year, whether it was the freeing biking journeys of Wheel World or the artistic experience of Skate Story. Whether or not you don't typically enjoy sports, there are more and more games out there that are eager to invite you into the fandom.
